The following requirements apply to Utah High School Activities
Association (UHSAA) sponsored festivals:
Region Choir, Region Training Choir, Region Orchestra, Region Band, Region
Jazz, Region Solo/Ensemble, State Solo/Ensemble, State Jazz AND Utah Music Educators Association (UMEA)
sponsored events: State Choir, State Orchestra, State Band.
All candidates must attend the adjudication seminars offered in Salt Lake in October or St. George in February every three years. Cost is $5. The seminars will provide instruction on adjudication philosophy, forms and procedures. Seminar participants will also declare their qualifications in each of the ten areas of adjudication: choir, orchestra, band, jazz, vocal S/E, string S/E, woodwind S/E, brass S/E, percussion S/E and piano/harp S/E. Qualifying will be based on the following scale:
0-1 not qualified
2 Region alternate
3 Region (State alternate)
4-7 State
Alternates should only be invited if other qualified adjudicators are not available.
UMEA Choir, Orchestra, Band, and Jazz Vice Presidents may make special arrangements to provide the adjudication instruction for individuals in their respective areas who cannot attend the seminars.
CHOIR ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music degree, 3 years membership in college choir
— 5 years superior ratings region/district choir festival
— 3 years superior ratings state choir festival
— 3 years college choir teaching
— Advanced degree in music education or choral conducting
— 3 years professional choral conducting experience
— 5 years successful choral adjudication experience
ORCHESTRA ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music degree, 3 years membership in college orchestra
— 5 years superior ratings region/district orchestra festival
— 3 years superior ratings state orchestra festival
— 3 years college orchestral teaching
— Advanced degree in music education or instrumental conducting
— 3 years professional orchestral conducting experience
— 5 years successful orchestra adjudication experience
JAZZ ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music degree, 3 years membership in college jazz band
— 5 years superior ratings region/district jazz festival
— 3 years superior ratings state jazz festival
— 3 years college jazz teaching
— Advanced degree in jazz studies
— 3 years professional jazz performance experience
— 5 years successful jazz adjudication experience
BAND ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music degree, 3 years membership in college band
— 5 years superior ratings region/district band festival
— 3 years superior ratings state band festival
— 3 years college band teaching
— Advanced degree in music education or instrumental conducting
— 3 years professional band conducting experience
— 5 years successful band adjudication experience
VOCAL SOLO/ENSEMBLE ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music degree, vocal emphasis
— 3 years professional vocal performance experience
— 5 years superior ratings region/district S/E festival vocal ensemble
OR 5 post-college public solo recitals
— 3 years superior ratings state S/E festival vocal ensemble
OR 3 times featured aria soloist
— 3 years college vocal teaching
— 5 years successful vocal S/E adjudication experience
— 3 years successful vocal studio experience
students earn superior at state solo festival OR
students earn music scholarships OR
students earn chair in All-State Choir
STRING SOLO/ENSEMBLE ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music Degree, string emphasis
— 3 years professional string performance experience
— 5 years superior ratings region/district S/E festival string ensemble
OR 5 post-college public solo recitals
— 3 years superior ratings state S/E festival string ensemble
OR 3 times featured concerto soloist
— 3 years college string teaching
— 5 years successful string S/E adjudication experience
— 3 years successful string studio experience

PERCUSSION SOLO/ENSEMBLE ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
4 required for State
— Music Degree, percussion emphasis
— 3 years professional percussion performance experience
— 5 years superior ratings region/district S/E festival percussion ensemble
OR 5 post-college public solo recitals
— 3 years superior ratings state S/E festival percussion ensemble
OR 3 times featured concerto soloist
— 3 years college percussion teaching
— 5 years successful percussion S/E adjudication experience
— 3 years successful percussion studio experience

BRASS SOLO/ENSEMBLE ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);

— 3 years professional brass performance experience
— 5 years superior ratings region/district S/E festival brass ensembles
OR 5 post-college public solo recitals
— 3 years superior ratings state S/E festival brass ensembles
OR 3 times featured concerto soloist
— 3 years college brass teaching
— 5 years successful brass S/E adjudication experience
— 3 years successful brass studio experience
students earn superior at state solo festival OR
students earn music scholarships OR

WOODWIND SOLO/ENSEMBLE ADJUDICATOR
2 required for Region Alternate; 3 required for Region (State Alternate);
